Cellular
Phone Service Coverage. According to the FCC,
"coverage" refers to the geographic area where cellular phone service
subscribers can use cell phones. The breadth of coverage depends, to a
large extent, on the extent to which carriers have built their
networks. Some carriers charge additional fees for calls made or
received outside the network area. You must always read the fine print
while signing-up for any cellular phone service plan.

Analog/Digital/GSM Networks. At the time of writing this article, there are three kinds of cellular phone service networks: analog, digital, and GSM. Generally, calls made on digital networks are clearer and more secure. Service providers also provide more features on this network, in comparison to an analog network. GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) is more expansive -- and again more feature-rich -- in nature.
Pricing. Generally, cellular phone service plans provide you with a certain number of minutes per month at a certain price. Beyond this bundled price, your calls would be charged on per-minute basis. Depending on your plan, unused minutes would expire. Certain providers, however, allow you to rollover these unused minutes.

Night & Weekend and Anytime Minutes. In addition to the bundled minutes described earlier, carriers provide a huge bundle of additional minutes during nights and weekends. The "night" minutes start after a certain time of the day (defined in the contract; read the fine print), whereas the weekend minutes are generally reserved from Friday night till Monday early morning. Again read the fine print for details. Anytime minutes are minutes available anytime (other than nights and weekends, generally).
